A short history of Mu Beta Psi at Clemson...

In the Fall of 1936, a group of students at Clemson College decided to form a group to "promote better fellowship among the musicians of the various musical organizations of a college, and among the musical organizations of the different colleges, and to advance music to its position of importance as an educational subject" (1937 TAPS). With help from students at North Carolina State University, Mu Beta Psi was formally chartered at Clemson on January 16, 1937. For over 68 years we were the oldest active Greek Organization on the entire campus.

For nearly forty years, Delta flourished at Clemson as an all-male fraternity that provided essential support and manpower to the music organizations at Clemson. Mu Beta Psi was heavily involved in the early band programs as well as the glee club choral ensembles. Delta Chapter founded what is now the University's Jazz ensemble; and one of Clemson's most famous jazz groups, The Jungaleers, was filled with Brothers from Mu Beta Psi. The marching band was also well-populated with Brothers who filled leadership roles and helped Tiger Band become one of the University's most recognizable symbols.

In March of 1976, Delta Chapter merged with a sister sorority called Psi Mu Psi, and Mu Beta Psi became co-ed at Clemson. The new Chapter, nearly 50 individuals strong, was larger and more influential than ever. Thus began the "modern" age of Mu Beta Psi at Clemson. Delta Chapter's legacy was a group that was, along with the rest of the fraternity, co-ed, multi-cultural, multi-racial, and cross-ensemble. Delta was at times the most diverse organization at Clemson University.

At the national level, Mu Beta Psi has active Chapters throughout the eastern United States; we also have an active Alumni Association. Although we are smaller than other national music-oriented fraternities, we feel this serves to our advantage. The feeling of family that bonds Brothers from Michigan to South Carolina is easy to establish, and everyone is important. It's practically impossible to feel lost in the crowd in Mu Beta Psi. Delta has historically been heavily involved in the national organization, boasting scores of past Alumni Association and National Officers.

Mu Beta Psi strongly believes in its purpose to bring together musicians from different organizations in a common fellowship. Today the members of Delta Chapter still strive to fulfill the purposes of our constitution in any way possible. We are proud of the rich history of Delta Chapter.
